Chapter Eighteen

MEG

I feel around blindly for my alarm as the shrill sound of my wakeup call rocks my skull. I slam my hand against the button to shut the damn thing off, then I slowly push myself to sit, groaning aloud when my head spins. Why do I drink red wine when it always leaves me feeling like crap the next day?

I snatch my mobile off the side and check for messages. There’s just one, and I open it and smile. My parents are taking Izzy out for the day, which will give me a chance to go and see someone about getting the house on the market. I groan again when I think about Dan and our kiss last night. Remembering I practically threw myself at him, I bury my face in my hands. I regretted it the instant my lips touched his.

I still remember the first time I kissed Dan, and it felt so right, like I was home. Last night, it felt far from that. He didn’t feel like my Dan anymore. It didn’t feel like home.

I force myself to get out of bed and shower. Then I pick out my outfit and head downstairs to grab a coffee. I text my mum back to confirm I’m happy for her to take Izzy for the day, and then I grab my bag and head out.

I find three different estate agents who all agree to come out to the house and valuate it, so we can decide who to put it on the market with. I then head to Sofia’s, because when I stopped by yesterday, I sensed she was struggling. I feel like I’ve spent the last few weeks so lost in my own misery, I’ve neglected her.

When she opens the door, she has a screaming Harry on her hip and a harassed look about her. I offer a sympathetic smile, and she opens the door wider for me to go in. “He’s been like this all night,” she says, and I swear there’s a wobble in her voice.

“He’s probably teething,” I suggest. “Do you want me to take him?”

She hands him to me without me having to ask twice and busies herself making a drink. Harry begins to quiet down, and I see the hurt in her expression. “It’s just a change of face,” I say. “Izzy used to do this to me all the time.”

She sits opposite me. “I feel so useless. I didn’t think it would be so hard.”

I grab her hand over the table and give it a gentle squeeze. “I promise it gets easier.”

“He hates me.”

“He does not. You’re his mother.”

“I don’t feel like I know him at all. I don’t know why he’s crying. I don’t know what he wants.” She breaks down, sobbing. “My parents were right—I can’t do this.”

“Sofia, it’s just the baby blues. Everyone goes through it. You’ve never done this before, and it’s not easy, so it’s okay to feel like you’ve not got this. But you will.
